More About White Tail Deer:
As herbivores, the Whitetail deer graze on nutrient-rich vegetation ranging from grass, flowers and weeds to wooded plants, fruits and lichen. Occasionally, you will catch sight of rare grazing at dawn and dusk hours. However, the coveted whitetail deer is primarily nocturnal.
Due to the nocturnal nature and astute senses, experienced trophy white-tailed deer hunts will use blinds, walk and stalk methods or, a combination of both to bag a trophy whitetail buck - primarily during the rut when they’re most vulnerable.
Mating season, otherwise known as the rut, will start as early as August and last through late November. During this time, does will produce 1-3 fawns. While a females can live to 8 years, an average adult male will live to six.
Wooded areas are where the whitetail deer feel safest. This means you will be trekking miles of through thickets and thorns, under branches and wading creeks. It's under the cover of forest and tall meadows where they maintain a haven from the harsh elements and predators such as coyotes, bobcats and the guided whitetail hunts.
Whitetail bucks shed their antler pride each winter and grow anew every spring until achieving optimal size between 5-6 years of age. Although rare, trophy whitetail hunting in Texas has uncovered racks up to 200” with the average being 130”.
The stealthy deer use their speed, agility and even swimming abilities to elude predators. When threatened, the whitetail will notoriously snort, stomp its feet and raise the white underside of its tail to alert fellow whitetail close by.
